Quite a morbid topic but as death is a key part of our lives it's clearly going to be some good material for music.

"American Pie" to most people is an upbeat number with a catchy chorus, but to a music aficionado like myself it's so much more. Written about the death of Buddy Holly, it chronicles music of the 60's in the most succinct and entertaining way possible. I strongly suggest you have a read about the meaning of the lyrics.

"Tears in Heaven" is an obvious choice but such a moving song cannot be ignored because of popularity. Written about the tragic death of Clapton's son.

"Long Live The Queen" is the most recent song on the list and the one that is most likely to catch you off guard. Again it sounds upbeat but if you listen to the lyrics, right from the off it's clear things aren't going to end well.

"Keep Me In Your Heart" is the only track I know written about the artists own demise and as a result is haunting. Exactly what you'd expect from such a wonderful lyricist (RIP).

"The Last Resort" and "Champagne Supernova" aren't strictly about death (though the former is about the death of the american dream), they are the songs I and my father respectively want at our funerals! One has to consider these things...

  1. American Pie - Don Mclean
  2. Tears In Heaven - Eric Clapton
  3. Fire and Rain - James Taylor
  4. Cancer - My Chemical Romance
  5. Long Live The Queen - Frank Turner
  6. Keep Me In Your Heart - Warron Zevon
  7. Champagne Supernova - Oasis
  8. The Last Resort - The Eagles
